TWO people died and 33 others were injured when two commuter omnibuses collided along Samora Machel Avenue near the Grain Marketing Board headquarters in Harare on Saturday.

National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi yesterday said the accident was caused by one kombi driver who made a U-turn in the middle of the road, leading to the collision.

"ZRP would like the confirm the death of two people in a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the intersection of Samora Machel Avenue and Boddle Road near GMB headquarters on September 26, 2015," Nyathi said.

"A Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus which was proceeding southwards along Boddle Road with an unknown number of people suddenly made a U-turn in front of another oncoming Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus. The vehicles collided and the first commuter omnibus veered off the road to the left and stopped.

"A total of 33 passengers from the two were injured and referred to Parirenyatwa hospital for treatment. The first party [driver] fled from the scene of the accident. No police officers were involved during the occurrence of this road traffic accident."

Commuters have of late accused police officers of contributing to some of the accidents happening in the city by chasing after errant kombi drivers.
